The St James Police have launched a manhunt for gunmen who shot and injured a five-month-old girl and killed her mother in Montego Bay this morning.

Head of the St James Police, Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, has identified the deceased woman as Alexia Brown.

SSP Nesbeth says the injured infant remains in hospital.

He says information gathered so far indicate that explosions were heard in the Porto Bello community some minutes after 8 o'clock this morning.

SSP Nesbeth says a police team was sent to the area and the investigators discovered Brown and her infant daughter suffering from gunshot wounds.

He says the police are actively pursuing the gunmen behind the attack.

King says the crime problem is getting out of control and greater effort has to be made to stem it.
