The official count of ballots cast in yesterday's local government election is now underway across Jamaica.

Director of Elections Orette Fisher says the Electoral Office of Jamaica is working to have the official count completed by this Thursday so that councillors can be sworn in on Friday.

Last night the JLP took control of nine of the municipal corporations.

The PNP managed to on to three parish councils and the Portmore Municipal Council.

There is a tie in St Thomas.

Fisher says the EOJ conducted the polls successfully, despite the challenges and the short time it got to prepare.

And he says the EOJ intends to pay over 100,000 people who participated in the election day activities before the end of the year.

The director says up to yesterday there was an approximate voter turnout of 31 per cent voter down from just over 34 per cent in 2012 when the last local government election was held.
