A newspaper vendor believed to be in her 70s was this morning chopped to death in Falmouth, Trelawny by a 21-year-old man who is said to be of unsound mind.

The woman, Joycelyn Gomez, is of a Wakeland Drive address in the parish.

Reports from the police Corporate Communications Unit are that around 7:45, Gomez was standing at a post office on Market Street awaiting her Programme of Advancement through Health and Education (PATH) cheque, when she was pounced upon by her attacker.

She reportedly received several chops all over her body and died as a result.

The police have taken the attacker into custody.
