Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams accepts symbolic baton from DCP Glenmore Hinds during a swearing-in ceremony for the top cop in September 2014. Hinds was acting as police commissioner before Williams' appointment.

Outgoing Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams says a deputy commissioner of police has been identified to replace him, at least in the interim, when he demits office on January 7 next year.

Speaking on Beyond the Headlines on RJR94FM a short while ago, Williams would not name the deputy commissioner, but said the deputy is a long-time member of the force who will be able to do the job.

Earlier today, the National Ministry said the Police Service Commission will choose an appropriate person from within the force to act for 90 days.

The Ministry also said it will be engaging the Police Service Commission to re-examine the terms of engagement for Commissioner of Police as the search begins for a suitable replacement within three months.
