Samples from JDF recruits with mystery illness going to CDC for testing

The Government in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation is now preparing to send to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) blood samples taken from Jamaica Defence Force recruits affected by a mystery illness.

In the past two months, 80 recruits have been fallen ill with a flu-like respiratory illness.

Local tests have not been able to identify the cause of the illness, and so De La Haye says the samples will be sent to the CDC.

De La Haye says one recruit, now critically ill, was flown to Florida last night for treatment.

Five others remain in hospital in stable condition but the others have since recovered at the JDF facility.

De La Haye said a visiting medical team has discussed collaborating with the University Hospital of the West Indies to improve its capacity to handle similar cases locally.‎
