More than $1 billion worth of cocaine seized in 2016 - police

The Police Narcotics Division says it has seized more than $1 billion worth of cocaine since the start of the year.

According to the head of the Narcotics Division, Senior Superintendent McArthur Sutherland a total of 1,027 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of US$9.7 million or just over J$1.2 billion have been seized since January 1.

The Narcotics Police says 28,173 kilograms of ganja valued at just over $3 billion were also seized this year.

The Narcotics Police say it's operations resulted in the seizure of 19 illegal firearms and just under 1,500 assorted rounds of ammunition.

As a result, Sutherland says 271 men and 73 women have been arrested for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Firearms Act.

He says the men and women under his command are committed to the mandate of the division and will be relentless in their efforts to identify and investigate drug traffickers and bring them to justice.
