The National Security Minister said the Government will this year get tougher on motorcyclists who continue to flout the road code.

Montague said regulations are to be amended to make it mandatory for bikers to wear a helmet and safety vest.

He further stated that there will be a requirement for helmets to bear a registration number.

He said the measures are expected to help with user safety as well as crime fighting.

The Police and the Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Transport have been on a campaign to reduce crashes and fatalities among bikers, especially in western Jamaica.

There have been calls for the Government to plug loops in current regulations which make it easy for persons to operate a motorbike on the nation’s road.
