A meeting is to be held with stakeholders in Port Antonio, Portland, today to discuss the garbage problem in the parish capital.

The Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Audley Gordon, is expected to lead the discussion.

The garbage pileup has already forced the cancellations of at least six cruise ships that were destined for the resort town during the current winter tourist season.

Stakeholders were racing against the clock to get the town ready to welcome a cruise ship today.

The garbage has become a breeding ground for rats and other rodents, creating panic among business operators whose commercial waste had been left uncollected for several days.
