Police personnel will soon be able to ride free on Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses.

The National Security Minister Robert Montague says the initiative will last for a year.

"I have sat down with Minister (of Transport and Mining) Mike Henry and we have worked out a little plan and it is only going to affect those in Kingston and Spanish Town for the first phase,” Montague said.

He said stations will be established where the police personnel will be able to collect passes to access the JUTC service and appealed to cops not to abuse the system.

Montague also said negotiations are ongoing for a similar system to be implemented for correctional officers and members of the Jamaica Defence Force.

The JUTC is the government-owned bus service operating within the Kingston Metropolitan Transit Region Spanish Town, and Portmore.
