Technology giant Huawei beat out the competition to be named 'Best Consumer Electronics Brand' during the Best Brands 2016 awards ceremony, organised by The Serviceplan Group, Europe's largest independent communications agency, in Shanghai recently.

Global brands Apple and Canon were also vying for the award.

Other winners included Airbnb - Best Disruptive Brand; WeChat - Best Digital Economy Brand; and BMW - Best Emotionally Bonding Brand.

Launched in Germany in 2004, Best Brands was designed to recognise the most successful and powerful brands. The marketing awards were introduced in China for the first time in 2014. It is the first brand ranking in China to take a comprehensive view of the consumer's opinions, evaluating based on both emotional and behavioural dimensions, creating transparency and objectivity.

Glory Zhang, chief marketing officer of Huawei Consumer Business, delivered the keynote speech at the ceremony. She noted that the business was growing fast. In only five years, the business has grown into one of the world's top three smartphone brands. Interbrand ranked Huawei as one of the top 100 brands since 2014. This year, the company is taking a step ahead, moving to number 72.

"Today, Huawei has worked with Leica to redefine smartphone photography. With the world's first Leica dual-camera design, Huawei P9 has helped over 10 million people around the world to capture the wonderful moments in their life and turn them into artistic photos. Innovation is at the core of our business. We focus on meaningful innovations, which are important to the consumer experience. This is why we break through in performance and power consumption, with Huawei Mate 8, and we introduced the world's fastest chipset Kirin 960. And the latest Mate 9 Porsche Design is so hot worldwide because consumers are excited to see the best combination of fine craftsmanship and powerful performance in a flagship smartphone," she noted.

Ending her speech, Zhang disclosed: "It is the passion to aim high and to make a difference that unifies the overall 170,000 employees of Huawei worldwide. It inspires the whole team to achieve unexpected greatness. We are happy to see more and more people recognise our innovation and love to use our products. But we will be even much happier to witness more and more people get inspired by our brand. We hope the passion of Huawei brand can give them endless courage to challenge and to change for the better in their life."
