The National Security Minister says the government is looking to put penalties in place for persons who make prank calls to the police emergency number 119.

However, he has not indicated the range of penalties being contemplated.

According to the police, its emergency number receives 22,000 prank calls daily.

While acknowledging that this is putting a strain on scarce state resources, Montague says before resorting to penalties, the government would continue to appeal to members of the public to be responsible.
