Deputy Commissioner of Police Novelette Grant has been appointed to act as police commissioner for 90 days.

The deadline for applications for the post of Police Commissioner has been extended to February 6.

The original deadline was Monday.

The post became vacant after Dr. Carl Williams stepped down early this month.

Deputy Commission of Police Novelette Grant, who has expressed an interest in the post, is acting as commissioner for 90 days.

The Police Service Commission says it is seeking suitable candidates from within and outside the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

The National Security Minister Robert Montague has indicated that the next police commissioner will be employed under a contract with specific performance targets.

Montague also said the next police commissioner must come to the job with a plan to tackle Jamaica's crime situation.
