The police are today conducting a series of operations across St Catherine and Clarendon which are aimed at clamping down on extortion, restoring public order and reducing traffic congestion in major towns.

The initiative comes amid concerns about the general lawlessness in most major towns across the island and reports that criminal are raking in millions of dollars by extorting businesses and bus operators in the Spanish Town area.

In a statement released this morning, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said the operations will focus on markets and bus parks in Spanish Town, Linstead and May Pen.

The JCF says police personnel will target persons involved in extortion and provide a reassuring presence in public spaces.

And it says as part of the efforts to reduce congestion, the police will also be focussing on illegal vending and illegally parked vehicles.
