Phillips is widely expected to succeed outgoing Opposition Leader and PNP President Portia Simpson Miller.

Dr Peter Phillips, the People’s National Party (PNP) member of parliament for East Central St Andrew, is to be officially nominated for the presidency of the party on Wednesday.

Phillips, who is widely expected to succeed outgoing Opposition Leader and PNP President Portia Simpson Miller, is scheduled to arrive at the PNP’s Old Hope Road, St Andrew, headquarters at 11 a.m., accompanied by several party stalwarts and supporters from his constituency.

A special advisory issued to media today stated that signatories to Phillips’ nomination include the officers of the party, Peter Bunting, Phillip Paulwell and other regional chairmen, the PNPYO, the Patriots, the PNP Women’s Movement, the National Workers’ Union; and the two PNP councillors from  Phillips’ constituency – Nenna Wilson, representing the Hagley Park division and Dennis Gordon of the Maxfield Park division.

On Sunday, Simpson Miller announced during a PNP National Executive Council meeting in Manchester that she would be submitting her resignation as opposition leader to Governor General Sir Patrick Allen on April 2, after a special delegates conference to elect a new party president on March 26.
