Dr Peter Phillips greets his supporters at the People’s National Patry headquarters on Hope Road in Kingston, on February 8.

At the close of the People’s National Party (PNP) presidential nomination period at noon today, Dr Peter Phillips is the only person to have submitted applications and be nominated.

In a statement, the PNP said it is therefore expected that Phillips will be declared elected by acclamation, as the party's fifth president at a special delegates conference scheduled for March 26.

Portia Simpson Miller will remain president until then and will continue as leader of the opposition until April 2.

"The party’s secretariat will now proceed to finalise arrangements for the special delegates conference where the constitutional process of electing a new president will be completed," said the party's general secretary, Julian Robinson.

"I am pleased that the party has, in this exercise, maintained its very strong democratic foundation and principles and as general secretary I would like to thank the officers and the wider membership for their cooperation in making the process to date seamless and incident-free."
