The Government has pledged to have a full roll out of the long-awaited National Identification System (NIDS) next year.

Before the end of this year a soft launch of the system is scheduled to take place.

Speaking this morning at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Education and Information Minister Ruel Reid says Cabinet has approved the issuance of drafting instructions to establish legislation for the NIDS.

Reid says guidelines are to be issued and working groups formed to further develop the specific elements of the legislative and regulatory framework for the implementation of the NIDS.

The NIDS is intended to provide a comprehensive and secure structure to capture and store personal identity information for citizens and persons resident in the island.

The system will have a unique identification number for every Jamaican with anti-fraud features.
