Port Antonio mayor to probe reports of squatting at Prospect Beach
The Port Antonio Mayor Paul Thompson has promised to investigate reports that the Prospect Fishing Beach is being overrun by illegal settlers.
The informal settlers have constructed houses on the property with no sanitary convenience or piped water.
This has raised serious health concerns among business operators in Prospect.
They are also fearful that the squatters could endanger the environment and affect the future of their businesses.
One business operator, Basil Henry, says in the past 10 years, the population on the beach has grown from 12 fishermen to about 120 people.
There are also claims that there is drug running and prostitution at the Prospect Beach especially at nights.
