CMI closer to becoming a university

The Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) is now closer to becoming a university, after the Senate on Friday passed the Caribbean Martime University Act.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid who piloted the bill said the CMI is poised to becoming a growth driver for Jamaica.

Government Senator Don Wehby in his contribution agreed with Reid arguing that the move to give the CMI Univesity status, will make Jamaica more attractive in the international export industry.

Leader of opposition business in the Senate Mark Golding also supported the bill hailing the CMI as an institution of international standing.

The Caribbean Martime University Act repeals the Caribbean Maritime Institute Act which currently governs the East Kingston-based institution.
