The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) last week announced the first set of recipients of its Education Grant programme, for college students of communications and media.

The grants, which opened during the National Journalism Week held in November 2016, were funded by Digicel and were awarded to students from CARIMAC, University of the West Indies, Kingston, Northern Caribbean University in Mandeville, the University of Technology, Kingston, and the Western Jamaica campus of the University of the West Indies, in Montego Bay.

Inspired by the programme, long-time PAJ member Leroy Brown and his wife Doreen joined the effort and funded another grant for a CARIMAC student.

The winners of the PAJ/Digicel grants are Gabrielle Thompson of NCU, Justice Okeugo of UWI's Western Jamaica campus, Crystal Taylor of UTech, and Brittany Brown of CARIMAC. The PAJ/Leroy & Doreen Brown grant has been awarded to Chester Jones of CARIMAC.

The Browns also awarded a scholarship to The Gleaner's Dania Bogle, who is a student at UTech.
