Buff Bay main road in Portland to reopen to single lane traffic
The National Works Agency (NWA) says the main road between Orange Bay and Windsor Castle in Portland is now open to single lane traffic.
The road was closed yesterday by the agency after strong wave action undermined a section of the sea wall resulting in a cavity developing under about half of a section of roadway.
Since then, the agency has been working at the location in an attempt to protect the sea wall and prevent a complete collapse of the retaining structure.
NWA Communications manager, Stephen Shaw, says several truckloads of material, including boulders and river shingle, have been used to fill the cavity.
Shaw says the road will only reopen to single lane traffic as the work to protect the sea wall continues.
He says heavy equipment is still being used in the vicinity of the collapsed road and persons are being asked to exercise extreme caution when using the roadway.
