Cigarette distributor Carreras suspends sales to prepare for higher prices come Monday

Jamaica’s leading distributor of cigarettes, Carreras Limited, will not be selling any of its products today.

The company, which distributes the popular brands of Mattehron and Craven A, says its sales department will be closed for business today to facilitate updates to its systems, resulting from the announcement by Minister of Finance, Audley Shaw, of an increase in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on cigarettes effective next Monday.

“We therefore wish to advise our customers and consumers, that due to this closure, no sales visits will be made by our Sales Representatives and all our sales depots across the island will be closed.

“Our sales operations will resume on Monday, March 13, 2017,” said Carreras in a release.

The company is yet to comment on the increase in the SCT but it has repeatedly warned that increase in the prices of its products leads to increased demand for illegal cigarettes from which the Government earns no revenue.
