Finance Minister Audley Shaw speaks during a post-Budget Press Conference, at the Ministry of Finance this morning.

Finance Minister Audley Shaw says the increased taxes on gas, which has upset public transport operators, shows the switch to indirect taxation at work.

Indirect taxation is the imposition of taxes on goods and services that people consume rather than income or profits.

Shaw also slammed operators whom he says never complained when gas prices are on the decline.

President of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO), Louis Barton, says his group will decide by Friday what level of fare increase the association will be requesting in light of the tax increase.

He says after that, JATOO will consult with the other lobby groups to work out an official position.
