School-feeding programmes in Jamaica help to enhance enrolment and contribute to the students' learning and cognitive abilities. Hi-Lo Food Stores, a division of GK Foods and Services Limited, has embarked on a campaign called 'Cans For A Cause' with the objective of ensuring adequate nutrition for students through increased access to affordable healthy, safe, and quality foods in schools.

Thirty-nine schools will be selected to participate - 13 schools being chosen from each of the company's stores. According to Patrique Goodall, marketing officer at Hi-Lo Food Stores, the initiative aims to provide food donations to under-resourced breakfast and lunch programmes in schools across the island.

"We have received numerous letters asking for support, and while we wish we could give to all, we have decided to bring our customers and communities on board to reach as many schools as possible," Goodall said.

School administrators, including principals, teachers and parent-teacher association representatives, can submit a 300-word statement outlining why they are in need of assistance for their school-feeding programme.

"The more donations made on behalf of your school, the greater your chances are to win. We believe that no child should have to learn on an empty stomach and the reality is that many students go to school without food," Goodall said.

Meanwhile, RenÈe Nathan, general manager, Hi-Lo Food Stores, said the company remains committed to giving back to communities.

"Our children are our future and we need to ensure that they are armed with all they need to be successful," Nathan said.

The deadline for entries has been extended to Friday, March 24, 2017. Emails can be sent to Write 'Cans For A Cause' in the subject line.
