In her last contribution to the budget debate last week, Simpson Miller called the moment bittersweet.

She said her heart was filled with gratitude and expressed thanks to Jamaicans at home and abroad for their love and support.

Simpson Miller will step down on April 2 as Opposition Leader, paving the way for Phillips to take over.

Phillips is to be affirmed at a special delegate’s conference this Sunday as the new People's National Party (PNP) president.

PNP General Secretary, Julian Robinson, told a media briefing today that there will be no actual voting since Phillips is the only nominee.

Instead, he said Phillips will be confirmed by acclamation.
