Prime Minister Andrew Holness has sought to assure that there would be no unnecessary delay in calling a by-election should the South West St Andrew MP Portia Simpson Miller resign.

Simpson Miller will demit office as People’s National Party President on Sunday.

On April 2, she will retire as Opposition Leader.

She will, however, remain as the Member of Parliament for South West St Andrew.

At a press conference this morning, Holness was asked how soon after the resignation of an MP would he be prepared to call a by-election.

In response, he said he told Simpson Miller that there would be no undue delay once the Electoral Office of Jamaica is ready to conduct the polls.
