The man who yesterday chopped a police constable in Bath, St Thomas before escaping has been fatally shot by the police.

The police say Derrick Urquhart, otherwise called Three Finger Jack, was shot after he attacked a policeman who was trying to apprehend him.

The man was killed about 11:30 this morning in the New Road area of the community.

The police say a team this morning went in search of Urquhart, who was wanted for wounding and larceny, and he was spotted on a farm.

According to the police, two members of the team approached him and noticed that he had a machete.

The police say he was told that he was under arrest and that he should put down the machete.

He reportedly refused and allegedly attacked one of the cops who fired a shot at him.

The cop fell and while on the ground Urquhart reportedly proceeded towards the policeman with the machete.

He was then shot by the other policeman.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
