A male police corporal was last night shot dead in Grantham District, Frankfield, Clarendon.

Head of the Clarendon Police Superintendent Vendolyn Cameron Powell said the circumstances were not immediately clear.

The name of the cop, who was killed on the Grantham main road, was also being withheld until his immediate family was notified.

The Frankfield community has been under police radar for the past two years because of increased levels of gang violence.

This is the second attack on the police within 24 hours.

Earlier, another was injured in St Ann, after gunmen detonated a grenade causing shrapnel to hit a policeman in his chest.

The gunmen, who then opened fire before escaping from a house in Armadale, are believed to have been involved in a quadruple murder in Westmoreland a week ago.
