A recommendation has been made for the Government to consider relocating the Metcalfe Street Juvenile Centre in light of security concerns.

The Ministry of National Security says the recommendation was made at a meeting this morning with representatives of the Department of Correctional Services and the Denham Town Police.

The call follows Tuesday’s incident where a bus carrying workers employed to the centre was damaged by gunshots while traversing Hannah Street in downtown Kingston.

None of the three persons travelling in the bus was injured but the windshield was damaged.

The Department of Correctional Services has said there is no report to suggest that the bus was targeted by gunmen.

Meanwhile, the security ministry says further recommendations were made for psycho-social support, additional internal security and greater collaboration on operational matters between the Metcalfe Street Centre and the Denham Town Police.

The ministry says it will continue to work with the police and the corrections department to ensure the safety and security of staff and children at the facility.
