Novia Lamont, the sister of slain pregnant woman Kayann Lamont, says the justice system has failed her family.

Police Corporal Dwayne Smart was yesterday found not guilty of Kayann’s murder.

Kayann, who was seven months pregnant at the time of the 2012 shooting, was shot in the head.

Novia was shot in the shoulder.

Constable Smart was also found not guilty of wounding with intent.

Speaking with our news centre the 29-year-old woman said her family is devastated by the verdict.

She said Constable Smart should have been held responsible for her sister's death.

In his defence, the policeman argued that the shooting was accidental.

The prosecution led evidence that the policeman was on foot patrol when a woman was heard using expletives and Corporal Smart approached her and attempted to arrested her.

An altercation developed between the policeman and Kayann and Novia intervened.

During the tussle, the policeman’s gun went off shooting the sisters.

Meanwhile, the court is to set a trial date for the negligence suit filed by the family against the Government.
