The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) says it is still assessing the cost of the damage caused by Thursday's fire at the Kingston Craft Market which is to reopen on Saturday.

In a release this morning, the UDC said the clean-up exercise has been completed and the craft market located on the Kingston waterfront is to be reopened on Saturday at 9 o'clock in the morning.

The agency says the Fire Brigade has also completed its assessment of the damage which affected approximately 2,000 square feet of shop space on the eastern side of the craft market.

The UDC says its technical team is now working on an estimate of the damage to the structure and a figure should be arrived at by next week.

It says the building is insured.

Some 18 shops were damaged when fire believed to have been caused by an electrical malfunction engulfed a section of the market early yesterday morning.

The UDC says affected vendors are being assisted with grief counselling, business continuity initiatives and inventory storage.
