Basil Waite, a former People's National Party (PNP) senator, was elected the party's deputy general secretary at today's meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) in Montego Bay, St James.

Waite will be crucial to the PNP political machinery as the now, Dr Peter Phillips-led PNP rebuilds its organisation.

Waite has been out of the political limelight for two years following his arrest over allegations of attempting to pervert the course of justice, while acting as advisor to former Minister of Local Government, Noel Arscott.

He was arrested and charged by the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) in October 2014 for allegedly trying to influence the outcome of a corruption case by telephoning a businessman who was a witness in the case.

However, he was acquitted in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court in November last year after prosecutors said they were offering no further evidence against him.
