Close to 30 persons are now in an emergency shelter in St Catherine after their homes flooded during the heavy rain on Tuesday.

Parish disaster coordinator for St Catherine Patricia Lewis, this morning confirmed that the flood victims are being sheltered at Bullet Tree in the parish after the rising flood waters caused them to leave their homes in Big Pond near Old Harbour.

"Up to last night that was the number we had and although they are being cared for we hope the number remains," Lewis told The Gleaner.

She said while other emergency shelters are open they remain unoccupied, but relief personnel are in a state of readiness to assist any other flood victims.

According to Lewis, teams of emergency personnel are on the road doing a further assessment of the damage caused by the flood water.
