Public transport group pushes for fare increase
One group that represents bus operators in the Corporate Area is renewing its call for an increase in fares.
The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) has suggested that the increase should not be less than 50 per cent.
President of the TODSS, Egerton Newman, says the adjustment would help to cushion the effects of the high operating costs faced by bus operators.
Newman says his group is aware of plans by the government to improve the public transportation sector, but notes that it is impossible for the sector to continue operating without a fare adjustment.
To support this claim, he pointed to the tax imposed on fuel by Finance Minister Audley Shaw last month.
Newman says this has left bus operators incapable of providing quality service to the public.
