Health Ministry says no problem with access to HIV/AIDS treatment in Jamaica

The Ministry of Health is dismissing suggestions that access to treatment by persons with HIV/AIDS is a problem.

UN Special Envoy on HIV to the Caribbean, Dr Edward Greene, said in a report last week that Jamaica had the least access to treatment for persons with HIV/AIDS in the entire Caribbean.

However, head of the National HIV/STI Programme in the Ministry of Health, Dr Nicola Skyers, says while infected persons are reluctant to seek treatment, there is no issue with access when they do.

Skyers says fear of discrimination from healthcare workers, challenges with the healthcare system, as well as denial are among the reasons persons stay away.
