Information Minister Ruel Reid says the much touted National Identification System (NIDS), will be revolutionary for Jamaica in its effort to create greater efficiencies.

He said with work on the system already at an advanced stage, the hope is for a complete rollout in 2018.

"We are hoping to have the rollout of this system certainly by next year," said Reid.

"This is truly going to be revolutionary for Jamaica, which will make the country a whole lot safer and will also create a more efficient way of doing business among other things," he added.

Reid was a guest speaker at the Inter American Development Bank  (IDB) – Caribbean Civil Society Annual Meeting at the Terra Nova All Suite Hotel in St Andrew, held under the theme: Delivery  Revolution  – Governments, Civil Society, a partnership for delivering.

The NIDS is intended to provide a comprehensive and secure structure to capture and store personal identity information for citizens and persons resident in the island.

The system will have a unique identification number for every Jamaican with anti-fraud features.
