The Redemption Market in downtown Kingston was last night gutted by fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but reports are that it may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit.

The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that the fire began after a brief interruption in the power supply to the market.

Many vendors who ply their wares in the popular location report that they have lost everything.

There are also reports of widespread looting during the frantic rush to save goods in storage.

Speaking at today's sitting of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation, Mayor Delroy Williams offered his sympathy to vendors.

He said the council is ready to offer assistance.
