Strong performance from Agri sector in 2016, increase in GDP contribution
The contribution of the agricultural sector to Jamaica's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) output increased to 7.3 per cent in 2016, based on figures published by the Planning Institute of Jamaica.
The 2016 Economic and Social Survey says the sector's contribution to overall GDP is up from 6.6 per cent in 2015.
It's contribution is second only to manufacturing, which is measured at 8.5 per cent for 2016.
The survey says growth for the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector was 13.5 per cent for last year following strong performances in traditional exports, animal farming and other agricultural crops.
The PIOJ survey attributes this strong performance of the sector to an intensification of farmer support programmes by the government and an increase in the demand for domestic crops arising from better linkages with the tourism sector.
