Parliamentary committee completes deliberation on zones of special operations bill
The joint select committee of Parliament which considered the Zones of Special Operations bill a short while ago has formally completed its deliberations by receiving a minority report which will accompany the majority report to be tabled during this afternoon's sitting of the House of Representatives.
Yesterday, the parliamentary opposition complained bitterly that the government was attempting to table the report without giving the opposition sufficient time to review it and prepare a minority report.
Prime minister Andrew Holness who has responsibility for the Zones of Special Operations bill made the decision to withdraw the report for re-tabling today.
The bill which empowers the prime minister in consultation with the National Security Council to declare a volatile area a zone of special operations to clamp down on criminal activities. After the declaration by the prime minister the security forces will be able to search places, vehicles or persons within specific areas without a warrant.
