Just re-elected president of the Jamaica Manufacturers Association Metry Seaga has charged that if the stranglehold of crime on the manufacturing sector is released it could result in a doubling of the 8.5 per cent the sector now contributes to the country’s GDP each year.

Seaga added that if crime is reduced manufacturing would contribute significantly more than the 70,000 jobs it now provides, more than the US$486 million in export earnings and more than the J$55 billion in taxes.

According to Seaga there also needs to be a leveling of the playingfield in terms of the same low interest rates offered to the BPO and tourism sectors being offered to manufacturers as they are just as or more important than the other sectors.

He also challenged JMA members to hold him and his team accountable to them, charging them to see that they deliver on their promises to improve business conditions for manufacturers.
