Footprints | Hector Spence - Father of nine drives into the Great Beyond
Harry Spence and Vivia Watson had eight children. Born in the district of Lime Hall, St Ann on
January 5, 1941, Hector Spence was the first child.
Somewhere along his life's journey, Hector acquired the alias 'Busta', and later a wife called Vilda 'Joy' McFarlane, whom he married in 1968.
Elementary school was the end of his formal education, and his debut into the world of work, where he was employed by his own father as a driver.
Spence evolved into a multiple-award-winning skilled driver who manoeuvred heavy vehicular equipment at Kaiser Bauxite Company to which he was employed from 1967 to 1998.
The following year, on May 11, his world came tumbling down when his wife predeceased him. They were also partners in a business which they operated in Wilberforce, Retreat and Lillyfield in St Ann.
Another relationship was to produce three more children for Spence, but unfortunately, their mother, too, predeceased him. Death by way of cancer also lurked around him in 2010.
Spence persevered, and recovery was followed by baptism into the Roman Catholic Church. Yet, last year his health started to go downhill again, and it slowly and painfully reached the bottom of the hill on Saturday, May 6, when he drove into another realm. His children were by his side.
His funeral service was held in Holy Name Catholic Church in Bamboo, St Ann, Saturday, May 20. He was eulogised as a hard-working, energetic, caring, dedicated and loving individual who loved music, dancing, rearing and planting his own crop.
In addition to nine children (Hector Jr, Robert, Sophia, Michael, Rhona, Gladstone, Jody Ann, Wayne, Maxine), Hector Spence has left behind 13 grandchildren, six sisters, seven brothers, and other relatives.
