Steve Lyston | Your mind is your weapon against poverty

The ‘sky juice’ evolved into bag juice, and the pushcart entered the racing circuit through the creation of the Pushcart Derby.

The mind is one of the most important parts of any human being. What we think and speak on a daily basis are critical and impacts our existence significantly. Success and failure both begin in the mind. If we paint a picture of poverty, joblessness and hopelessness and study that picture daily, or if, in your mind, you believe that your only option is to beg, or be a prostitute or to yield to a life of crime, then that's the manifestation you will experience - it is exactly what will happen.

God created each of us with the ability to think of great ideas, solutions and inventions. All great inventions come from a thought which manifests when we move by faith. Take, for example, famous African-American scientist and inventor George Washington Carver. He was born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri, around 1864. The exact year and date of his birth are unknown. Carver went on to become one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time, as well as a teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. Carver devised more than 100 products using one major crop - the peanut - including dyes, plastics and gasolene. One of his many quotes states: "I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in."

Our parents and grandparents made their own coconut oil for cooking and would use it also as a lotion of sorts or as hair grease. We made our own sugar from cane. Practically every household had someone who could make guava jelly or orange marmalade. To beat the heat, we made and sold 'sky juice' from the man with the pushcart. The 'sky juice' evolved into bag juice and the pushcart entered the racing circuit through the creation of the Pushcart Derby. We are innovative and poverty is no excuse for not producing. There is a saying that "necessity is the mother of invention - that statement clearly lets us know that within poverty is the potential for you to be an inventor!

The very dirt/soil you are standing on has the potential to be world-class building material.

If other nationals can come into our nation broke and then ultimately become millionaires, then there is something wrong with the way we think. Negativity is contagious and sometimes we have to leave not just our families, but the very community, in order to see the positive picture. If, for example, a person sees gambling as his/her only way out, then even when they get an idea/solution, they will either gamble it away or think that the only way to fund it is to gamble. Furthermore, if we walk with thieves, we will begin to steal; if we walk with the wise, we will become wiser; if we walk with fools, we will become foolish. Your environment influences your mind, and the state of your mind determines your action/inaction.

People are always looking at the politicians as their saviour and deliverer, which is wrong. God is our saviour and deliverer. In our minds, we must see and understand that they are servants of the people and not our masters, and so the people are always disappointed. Handouts give way for manipulation. We have the authority to create our own employment and change our community.

Check and see that for the last century, the only ideas our politicians have had is to pass laws and shackle the people and bring greater oppression on the people. Because of the state of our leaders' minds, there is no vision and as such, the people are perishing.

- Reduce the purchase of 'brand name' items - including phones, clothing, shoes, and flat-screen televisions - and live simply. What you save, you can use to start a business. Use your life experience and turn it into a book or a movie. These days you can make a short movie using your phone.

- Write down on paper the ideas God has given/gives to you and start small.

- When you want the blessings of God, present something to Him so He can bless it. If you sit down doing nothing, God can't bless you (Deuteronomy 28: 12; Deuteronomy 15: 10).

- Always think and speak positively every day. Stop speaking negatively - "The economy is bad"; "There are no jobs"; "Nobody wants me"; "I am broke". Speak positive things/speak life - "I am the next successful CEO", "I am a successful entrepreneur"; "This is the best day/week/year/of my life to date"; "Wealth and increase belongs to me and it comes to me today."
