Cabinet OKs interim cap on phone bills for ministers
The Andrew Holness-led Cabinet has approved an interim telephone bill cap of $40,000 per month for ministers and their state ministers in the various ministries.
Information Minister Senator Ruel Reid made the announcement during this morning's post- Cabinet media briefing.
Holness, in the the wake of the recent revelation that Finance Minister Audley Shaw had racked up a bill of $8.34 million over an 11-month period ending last February, had described the situation as unacceptable.
The prime minister also promised to cap government ministers' phone charges.
In October alone, Shaw's bill was $4.2 million.
Shaw had explained that the bulk of the charges resulted from data roaming fees, and that he had not been aware they were being incurred.
Holness had directed the Ministry of Finance to review and report on the respective policies for the provision of communication services, including cell phones, operating in the various ministries.
