Electronic monitoring coming for persons under restraining order

The Government is to introduce electronic monitoring of persons subjected to restraining orders.

National Security Minister Robert Montague says discussions are underway with a supplier to procure the equipment.

Montague says the programme is aimed at, among other things, reducing incidents of domestic violence.

Domestic disputes are one of the major factors behind murders in Jamaica.

The security minister explains that with electronic monitoring victims of abuse as well as the authorities will be able to keep track of perpetrators so as to prevent a crime from being committed.

Montague was speaking yesterday at a signing ceremony between the Police, the security ministry and the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies.

The partnership will see 300 police recruits being trained and housed at the institution.

Meanwhile, the security minister indicated that the electronic monitoring platform will also be used for persons on bail and persons released early from prison.

He said the tool is being used as part of the government crime fighting response.
