The UWI Development & Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) donated $15 million to the University of the West Indies Mona campus in support of research.

Professor Terrence Forrester, chief scientist in medical research at UWI Mona, visited the UWIDEF office at the Mona campus last Thursday for the formal handover.

"This donation will provide additional resources for the university to continue its important research in the areas of diabetes, hypertension and stroke, which are major causes of illness in Jamaica," said executive director of the fund, Carla Seaga.

Professor Terrence Forrester, who received the donation on behalf of the university, expressed his appreciation for the support which, he said, would provide a major source of funding for further work in this area of medical research.

UWIDEF, a registered charitable organisation on the UWI Mona campus, supports the development of the UWI in many ways.

The fund provides assistance for the welfare of students and financing for scientific and academic research and development, including ongoing contributions to the University Hospital of the West Indies.
