PNP assembling team to help Shane Alexis in battle for St Mary South East
A team of senior politicians from the People’s National Party (PNP) is reportedly being assembled to help the party’s candidate, Dr Shane Alexis, as he prepares to go up against Dr Norman Dunn of the Jamaica Labour Party in an expected by-election in St Mary South East.
PNP general secretary Julian Robinson would not disclose the members of the team, but said the party is preparing itself.
It's understood, however, that former cabinet ministers and veterans who worked alongside former Prime Minister PJ Patterson are among the members of the team on which the party is banking to secure victory for Alexis.
Gleaner sources close to the situation say there was a meeting of delegates and some members of the team yesterday during which preparations were made for Alexis to be presented to the delegates of the party by PNP president Dr Peter Phillips.
Another meeting is to be held soon to finalise matters surrounding the campaign, including its financing.
Meanwhile, there are reports of unease in the constituency regarding Alexis’ candidacy, as some people feel a more experienced politician should have been selected given Dunn's impressive showing in recent elections.
Contacted yesterday, former Member of Parliament for the constituency Harry Douglas down played the issue arguing that in political parties, not all will agree on everything.
However, he admitted that the party needed to do some political work in the constituency, suggesting that the constituency organisation was not ready for a by-election.
