Mayor of Montego Bay, Homer Davis, says he’s hoping more zones of special operations will be declared in other sections of St James soon.

He made the comment as he praised the efforts of the police in instituting the first zone of special operations in the Mount Salem community, in the parish.

Mayor Davis says the zones are necessary for addressing St James’ growing murder rate.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared Mount Salem as the site for the first ZOSO, following the passage of the Zones of Special Operations Act in July.

Mount Salem has recorded 54 of the 200 murders in St James since January.

Since the commencement of the ZOSO, 12 persons have been taken into custody, including one of the most wanted men in St James.

The operation is expected to last 60 days.
