Two former Prime Ministers and former presidents of the People's National Party (PNP) have pledged their support for Shane Alexis, the medical doctor seeking to retain the St Mary South East constituency for the party.

P.J. Patterson and Portia Simpson Miller made the declaration as they addressed thousands of comrades at the PNP's 79th annual conference at the National Arena.

He said when Sista P hits the road and he takes the engine room "the deal" will be closed.

A date for the by-election is yet to be announced.

It has become necessary following the sudden death of MP Dr Winston Green more than a month a go.

"When the PNP is truly united we are invincible," said Patterson.

Simpson Miller would later tell comrades that she is ready to hit the road when the time comes.

"For those who thought we were done, a come wi jus a come," she said.

Simpson Miller also said she was disturbed by reports of vote-buying.

"It is time to save Jamaica again," she said.

Meanwhile, Patterson, hit at Prime Minister Andrew Holness for his infamous promise that under the Jamaica Labour Party government, people would be able to sleep with their doors open.

"When you are in Opposition be careful what you say," Patterson warned.
