St Thomas taxi man who sexually assaulted a 11-year-old girl sentenced to 35 years
A St Thomas taxi operator who sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl he was entrusted to take to school has been sentenced to a total of 35 years in prison.
Delton Smikle was sentenced to 20 years in prison for forcible abduction and 15 years for having sex with a person below the age of 16.
The sentence was handed down in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston yesterday by Justice Sonia Wint Blair and is to be served concurrently.
Smikle was convicted in the St Thomas Circuit Court in July after a seven-member jury deliberated for 20 minutes.
Prosecutors Andrea Martin Swaby and Judi-Ann Edwards led evidence that he was contracted to transport the victim and her older sister to school.
However, on November 28, 2012 Smikle took the victim’s older sister to her school before taking the 11-year-old to his home and had sex with her.
Prosecutors also revealed in court that he offered to purchase a cellphone for the victim if her family did not report the incident to police.
