Manufacturers' Association and Samuda to continue sugar talks

Agriculture Minister Karl Samuda and representatives of the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association (JMA) are expected to meet again today to continue discussions about claims that manufacturers are illicitly selling imported refined sugar to the retail market.

Samuda last week tightened regulations on the importation of the sweeter as a means to plug the loophole.

Manufacturers are currently given duty free access to import refined sugar. Manufacturers took issue with claims from Samuda that players in the sector are involved in the illicit sale.

The JMA issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding that he furnish proof or retract the comments.
