Holness says the sector provides employment for one in every four persons involved in sectors that provide goods and services to tourism.

Tourism continues to be Jamaica's key source of economic growth.

Speaking at the opening of Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) in Montego Bay yesterday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Jamaica earned almost US$2 billion in gross foreign exchange in eight months from the sector.

This is 8.3 per cent more than what was earned over the same period last year.

Jamaica received just over 2.8 million stopover visitors in the first eight months of this year, which is 6.9 per cent more than the previous period.

Cruise passenger arrivals also increased 5.1 per cent over the eight months.

The prime minister said the sector provides employment for one in every four persons involved in sectors that provide goods and services to tourism.

Holness said tourism represents a powerful catalyst for improving the socio-economic conditions of Jamaicans.
